I doubt something like this would sell well in the U.S. though. It’s a serious story in comic format. By and large, Americans don’t understand that concept. We also have this social stigma that if you read comics, you must be some kind of social reject and/or childish, so I doubt something like this will sell well anytime soon.
To follow up what monkey’s said — not only is it a serious story in comic format, it’s a serious story in *manga* format. Serious graphic novels have gained a bit of respect (mainly through having wide-release movies based off of them) but manga has the double stigma of 14-year-old fangirls screaming for naruto still. It cuts off some of the people who would otherwise enjoy the comic.
