A Lollypop or a Bullet is a short manga based on the book 砂糖菓子の弾丸は撃ちぬけない (Sugar Candy Bullets Can’t Pierce Anything). The plot follows two girls in rural Japan.

Nagisa faces reality head on. She knows she has a poor lot in life, and she knows how she can change it. With the welfare money spent, her brother becoming a shut-in, and her mom making meager wages at a convenience store, going to high school isn’t even a consideration. She has already decided to join the military after finishing middle school.

The last thing Nagisa expects is that the new transfer student, Mokuzu, would change her paradigms. She’s a distraction; not the reality that she needs. Some rich girl who claims to be a mermaid? Those lies, that kind of useless ‘candy’…. Nothing could be further removed from being a ‘bullet’.
